Out of curiousity, how many open tobaccos do you rotate at once? I seem to keep four or five open tins or jars on my desk; right now it's 10 Downing St., Irish Flake, Penzance and Pirate Kake. A lot more in the cellar, don't want anything to dry out.
I have, I think, 5 different tins open. A couple of those I haven't smoked in awhile.
... but they are all stored in small mason jars, and I only open them when I want to smoke some. So techically they're all "open", and yet all "closed". Not sure if that answers the question...
56 Opened in mason jars, 12 opened in tins or zip lock bags and 22 unopened. Many are at least 10yrs old. This site has added to my disorder.
Doing some reviews for a while of C&D blends...
Recent openings include: Gentleman Callers, Good Morning, Manhattan Afternoon (Flake).
The normal rotation is still intact: Captain Bob's Blend; Ship's Mate; Riverboat Gambler; Two Friends Heritage and Green River Vanilla. Those never change.
Two new blends are in the works as well: Smooth Sailing (50/50) Green River Vanilla and Captain Bob's Private Stock. And, Contented Hen 50/50 Green River Vanilla and a light Va/Bur with a dash of Latakia I flavor with Cherry Ameretto and Coconut Almond.
"Open" is a relative term to what I am smoking. All my "open" tobacco is in air tight tins or jars and are smoked almost every day. I prefer to use the term "rotation" as it indicates what is being smoked. In "storage" is really just back-up supplies of the same and a few others for the future. I like Flakes. So, when one is finished, I'll rotate another in the mix.
All of my blends, once open, go into 500ml bail-top Jars on my 'smoking cabinet.
Aromatics:
1. Weihnachts Tabak (Rarely smoke, too sweet)
2. H&H Burley Kake (Mix w/ PSLBF for fuller flavor, outside smoke)
3. Rattray Bagpiper's Dream (Rarely Smoke - decent flavor but bitey)
4. Gawith Kendal Mayor's Chocolate Flake (rarely smoke - sliced too thick, hard to rub out, needs to be cubed w. scissors to smoke.)
5. House Blend (Usually consists of leftover Aro's and sliced rope)
Non Aros:
1. Mac Baren Navy Flake (The classic. Usually smoke this in a cob)
2. Old Ironsides Lat Flake (Almost gone)
3. Brebbia Preludio (Balkan) (Plenty of this in the cellar - my 'go-to' english style blend)
4. MacB Mature VA (decent smoke, but don't smoke often)
5. Esoterica Blackpool (Loved this at first, but tough to keep lit and rather one-dimensional. Has been languishing)
6. Stokkebye LBF (Only a few slices of this left in a leather pouch)
7. G&H Dark Birdseye (In a 2 Liter Jar, I go through it that fast)
8. Partagas Picaduras Granuladas (Cuban Cigar pipe tobac, For spicing other blends - I keep this in a ceramic sugar jar - it is VERY dry - and sprinkle it into various blends that need a kick.)
I have 28 open at the moment - a combination of mason jars & tins. Some of these see very little entrance & I should probably just give them away. Others (like FVF) see at least daily consumption.
Hi Tim. I have eight tins open. Five gets smoked a lot each day, and three are smoked every other day.
I don't have a decent rotation yet, as I'm still doing a lot of 1st time (and sometimes last time) shopping.
Main rotation:
OGS, Squadron Leader, Wenti Blend, Univ. Flake, (Synjeco's Balkan may be added to the rotation next month)
Opened Tins that I wont be ordering again:
C&D Bayou Morning Flake, GLP Key Largo
Opened Tins that I may order again:
C&D Red Carpet
Bulks that I wont be ordering again:
S&G Chocolate flake, Walnut
Bulks that I may be order again:
S&G Balkan Flake, S&G St. James Flake
Special cases:
Prince Albert (I'll try to get the 14oz tube),
S&G FVF (I'll try a tin, the bulk wasn't very good),
Mac Baren Virginia nr 1 (I really like it, but it bites to much, so it's only smoked once in a blue moon)
I currently have opened tins of:
Orlik Golden Sliced,
Dunhill My Mixture 965,
Frog Morton On the Town,
Mac Baren Plumcake,
GLP Westminster, and
Prince Albert (tub).
In jars I have:
PS Balkan Supreme, and
Edward's Black Watch.
All great tobacco - life is good.
That was a chore. Other than the two tins there are about 20 jars of bulk blends I dip into and tubs of PA, SWR, H&H, and Edgeworth RR'd.
I used to preach about my 12 all the time, but I came to realize that is too many opens for as often as I smoke. Blends linger for too long and I got very bored with them. I am now down to nine opens that I smoke from, but I hope to whittle that down even more. Currently, those nine are:
C&D Epiphany (probably will not buy again)
Esoterica Tilbury (great stuff; will become a regular)
Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader (regular for me)
Samuel Gawith St. James Flake (regular, but I am getting tired of it)
GL Pease Westminster (great; closest thing to Penzance I have smoked)
Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake (regular)
Esoterica Penzance (regular and best damn tobacco in the world)
GL Pease Key Largo (great stuff; will buy again)
Esoterica Stonehaven (regular)
I also have two large bail-top jars containing:
Walnut
Edgeworth Ready Rubbed.
There are two jars that are tucked away for extra aging. I opened the tins too early, in my opinion:
Dunhill Medium Mixture
Esoterica Dunbar
Since I moved to a smaller place, my rotation has shrunk alot due to lack of storage space. Of course PA remains a staple, I also have a can of Half and Half, a whole bunch of Big n Burley. Old Joe Krantz of course arrives and is quickly smoked up (in fact believe I'll order some up now.)
8-)
I've got about 3 tins about right now.
I stored some of my English Blend in a Seal Jar as well as my Half and Half...
I have some Virginia Flake left in a tin.
Over the years I've had as many as 15 blends in my rotation. These days I have managed to bring it down to just one.
It hasn't been easy - trust me :)
