Is Five Brothers considered a Roll Your Own ( RYO ) tobacco? It seems to me that since the increase of the taxes for RYO 5BROS. has really gone up in price. I always thought it was considered Pipe Tobacco. Thanks in advance.
has gone up....RYO has nearly tripled in price and pipe tobak has doubled by the ounce.
Pipe tobacco has gone up in price but I don't think it doubled by the ounce. We would have been outraged on this site. I mean paying 16 ounce prices for 8 ounces . My recent order was pretty close to what my past orders were, but I noticed the big change for 5BROS.
Beginning April 1,2009 the new Federal Excise Tax rates went
into effect. The new f.e.t. will be:
2 oz tin: .36 8 oz $1.42 lb $2.83
This is an increase of .22, .87, and $1.73 respectively.
Teh tax on pipe smoke went way up percentage wise, but its still managable. The tax on RYO went up more than 2,000%. Roughly doubling the price.
Only manageable for a very short time. What's coming at us with H.R. 1256 will make the tax hike look like a game. We're talking here about "Prohibition". We will be breaking the law when we smoke our favorite tobacco and it will be expensive. Please be informed and write your Congressman.
With that jump in price, it certainly sounds like someone is considering it a RYO. I haven't bought 5Bros forever, so I am not sure what the prices are now.
I still rolled my own until the jump last April. The American Spirit tobacco I bought went from $13 to $25.
The taxes over tobacco only start rising in the 1980's.
When I started smoking in 1979 1 packet of 20 cigarretts was 17$50 (17.5 escudos), now, the same cigarettes cost 3.20€uros (633.6 escudos). So, in 30 years we had a rise of 3620,57% (someone check my maths, please)
However, never ever we had a talk of prohibition.
It is the way in which the new Law has been worded, if passed in its present form, would give the ultimate authority to the Tobacco Czar (to be appointed) that makes it a very real possibility that Prohibition could be the final result. Tobacco will come under the control of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for the first time in our history. The new appointed Tobacco Czar will have the power to put an end to tobacco manufacturing, processing, selling and smoking. It would be accomplished in various steps according to the law that could result in Prohibition within four years, according to some industry experts. The proposed law gives the government both the power and authority to put an absolute end to legal tobacco use. Reading through the Bill, it might appear that it is not there intent to do so. However, it is very clear that the power is granted to do so. This Bill is politically popular and it appears to me there is not enough resistance to halt it. I do believe this Bill will pass.
