Today I got another prof of the big difference between smoking a pipe and smoking cigs.
Exercise... I'm well over my optimum weight, at 125 Kg instead of the 80 Kg I should have (I have large bones... LOL), I have always been fat, even before pizzas and McDonalds existed in Portugal.
The fact is that about 8 years ago I was at 90 Kg. Two years of dieting and exercising like a maniac (14 hours per week in the gym plus 4 hours per week of Tai-Chi classes plus 6 hours a week of light Karate practice) made me lose about 50 Kg, all was well at the time, I had just got my karate yellow belt and was starting more advanced tai-chi classes.

Then something happened, and in a week I was back from my 2 or 3 cigs a day to 20 or 30. What made me do that is not important, the point here is that suddenly it was impossible for me to keep up with my exercising routine and I dropped everything, as I *needed* (right!) the smokes.

Today, just for the fun I dusted the old treadmill and started walking. After 15 minutes I noticed an amazing thing, I was sweating, not much, just a bit, my heart rate was a bit over the normal, but what amazed me is that my breath rate was absolutely normal. Never, ever, even when I had only 90 Kg and was smoking only 3 cigs a day I was able to do that.

It looks that this 8 months without cigs made a very interesting change to my body. Before, I had always to stop what I was doing because I couldn't got enough air, today I could have maintained that 4 Km/h walk for much longer even with the extra 50 Kg over my belly.

I'll never have a better prof that inhaling smoke is the root of all the bad things linked to tobacco smoking.

I'd like to thanks to the MPC people for the support while learning to smoke, without you I might have quit and get back to cigs. Only today I was able to see the huge difference between smoking cigs and pipes.
People, you probably saved me years of life. Thanks to you all.

Congrats, and don't thank us... it was you that did it.

Keep up with the walking, I guarantee you will drop that 50 kg in no time.

I walk 2 miles...

...everyday on my tread mill.... while puffing on my pipe. Remember, I don't inhale! I walk at a speed of 4 miles per hour. It takes me thirty minutes and the only days I don't do it are on ski days.

Congratulations Vasco. Enjoy your pipe and walk a lot! You have my permission to smoke your pipe while walking on your treadmill. But, NO CIGS!

Tennis

Tennis, 1-2 hours, 4-5 times a week. This is what made me realize the cigs had to go. Don't drink as much anymore and when I do, it's usually scotch or Jack. I sleep better, think better and seem to enjoy things more because I'm healthier.
Sweat?, I have a blackbelt in sweating. Watching a Foster's commercial make me break out in one.
Treadmills?, my wife has a great one in the living room in front of the 50". I, (I not her), use it once a week for an intense 20-30 mins on a non court day. I use it more the months here I can't play as often. Running bores the hell out of me, that's why I got the Wii. Tennis helps my focus, thinking, awareness and doesn't let the world intrude.
The pipe on the way home helps me reflect on what happened and what needs to happen.
I don't smoke during exercise, not even on the bowflex, (light workout, 3 tmes a week for 20-30 mins). Probably because I'm out of breath enough that I know I wouldn't enjoy it like I want.
Continued success,
Bob

Good stuff Vasco - now keep

Good stuff Vasco - now keep it up mate. I'm a gym attendee - not too regularly over the past little while - & have not found pipe smoking to be a negative at all. We all accept that inhaling tobacco smoke is not great for the lungs. But I think we've shown that pipe-smoking (without inhalation) has nothing like the deleterious effects of cigarette smoking. It's not unusual to find really fit pipesters - that's just not generally true of cigarette smokers.

Way to go, Vasco

exercise is good for one's mood as well as one's body. I have a large lawn to mow, heat with wood, and a large garden...prefer having something to show for my labor.

Yesterday

in the hospital, before my (Minor) surgery, I was asked by the anesthesiologist attending if I smoked. I answered yes. "How Much?" -Three bowls in my pipe on a good day.
"Oh, we don't worry about pipe smoking"
Fom the mouths of babes- not that she was a babe, but I was under light sedation (under those conditions all women are babes, it's like after your second six pack of beer.)
Puff on!

thanks for the support

I'm surprised... My intentions were just voicing the results of a test that I know it's true. I can't fake my breath rate.
But with all this support... Well...
This is not the place to talk about it, but I just finished a 30m session, 2 Km, plus some stretching (the little my pot belly still let me do), in the end just to see if I still could do it, 3 series of 10 seat ups...
However I'm totally out of tune, I wasn't able to do correctly even the simplest chi-kung exercises (used as warm up and cool down for tai-chi), I guess that Iggy Pop's Wild One was the wrong music... LOL...

Anyway after all this my breath rate is just as normal as before and I'm cooling off with a bowl of Squadron Leader, then a bath and get a 12 hours sleep (ya right!).

thank you all.
