I bought a tub after picking up on this forum that it's a codgers' favourite. I smoked a few bowls & just recently, gave it away to another smoker who has asked me to order more. A request I've complied with. I find it a bit mild & perhaps too aromatic for my taste.
A few months ago, and find out that it coats my moth with something for days, just like St. Bruno.
The only way I can smoke it is mixed with a strong tobacco like SG black xx twist.
It is very far from being a favorite of mine.
Is that Walnut is a decent smoke. For having 7 of the worlds finest tobaccos in it, it is not multi-dimensional. I find it to be a basic rather simple smoke. Nice for a once in awhile change, but gets boring bowl after bowl. Worth having around when you want something different that is mild.
In so far as the walnut flavor, I agree, I think that regardless of what is said, one of the tobaccos in this blend is processed with Black Walnut flavor, I really don't think my nose and buds are lying to me about it, but I guess I could be wrong.
I've yet to find a blend than announces to be made of x (large number) of the finest/rarer/somethingelse tobaccos to be anything good.
A good example is Clan, which is supposed to be made of 11 somethings...
I think that it's like mixing colors, after 4 or 5 all you get is different shades of mud.
This is a tough crowd. If you want an English blend, don't expect to find it in Walnut. It is an old codger blend, with a twist. It was from a day when burley was the smoke of choice in America. Brands like PA, Briggs, Granger, SWR etc. were the norm and a blend from another country was a rarity and was usually Amphora, BR, or other cavendish type blends. It was only a few blends at the time that had Latakia in it like Revelation and Walnut. It led many to the pipe shop in search of Latakia Blends. It is a classic blend in and of itself. It does need to be let dried some but that applies to a lot of tobaccos. It is meant to be an all day smoke, but with a burley base. I rather like it myself and always have a couple of pounds around. Complex no, but bland, I don't think it's that either. I think to really appreciate it, one must like OTC codger burlies to begin with. Does it compare to SL or other great true Lat British blends? No, but it's not meant to be. I for one would hate to see it go the way of other American blends and disappear.
I did not know it was even sold bulk. I have not seen anything but the tub available in many years.
I don't have much in the way of eloquence, so it will have to suffice that I thoroughly enjoy Walnut. At first it struck me as an odd blend that I really couldn't figure out, but after 10 or so bowls it grew on me and settled into a nice, relaxing no-frills smoke.
If Walnut was readily available in this part of the world, I'd be smoking it regularly.
I got it from http://www.4noggins.com/
I wander if I really got Walnut... It can't taste any latakia on it...
It looks like they sell from a tub in 2 oz samples. You can for sure taste the Latakia but not in large quantities.

In honor of TOTM list I decided to give it another go...

But I'm afraid that my opinion is still very negative. My palate and tongue are becoming waxed and not even a trace (even at 1st light) of latakia.
When I started smoking I could taste something that looked like a very mild version of PA, but now I can't taste anything. I can feel some nicotine but no taste, no flavor...
That's really strange, I wonder if you got a bad run or a segregated bag. I am looking inside my tub right now and I can see and smell the Latakia. I had a bowl earlier and I tasted the latakia. I smoke a lot of Da Vinci from C and D which is stronger than Pirate Kake so I do know latakia. Walnut is not a strong Lat but it's there.
... then there just can't be much in there. I use 1/16th in CBB and everybody tastes it! Go figure?
I haven't smoked Walnut for over twenty years. But, my notes tell me the Latakia content is very light, indeed.
My notes from twenty years ago reads as follows: "A very comfortable blend, mild in condiment, but perhaps exceptional for OTC blends. Prefer Revelation. The local Uhle's blends satisfy the Latakia desire far better".
That's all I can offer on this one... it's been too long to have an accurate recall beyond my notes.
I do think Walnut is an exceptional OTC blend. But, every tinner makes multiple English blends with diversified condimentals and plenty of Latakia. Latakia is very good stuff. I enjoy it every night in favorite blends like Uhle's Bishop's Move and McClellan's Frog Morton (on the Town).
If you do like Walnut, mention it to your B&M guy and see what he might offer in comparison. You may be amazed. The problem is, are there any B&M's left? They are getting more and more scarce by the day!
Vasco, I think you just got an old sample. Though it is light, there is definitely Lat in Walnut, and I think there is no doubt that it should be noticeable. I'm gonna smoke a bowl tonight just to check it out. It's been a month or so since I have had it.
As I said I got 2oz bulk from 4noggins, but the parcel took about 1 month from USA to PT, maybe it was already old to start with, and 1 month on an unsealed plastic bag did the rest. However the PA and C&D blending Perique did the same journey without any problem.
I have been smoking Walnut for years. I really like this American-English blend. I know it is named after the oldest street in Philadelphia, and has no walnut flavor in the blend at all, but to me in the can it smells like black walnut. It comes fairly moist and stays that way a long time, as most OTC tobaccos do, but not a bad blend. It smokes dry and leaves a nice gray ash in the bottom of the bowl. It has little if any tongue bite. The bottom line is if you like English blends, with a whiff of latakia in it, you might try this, and the price is right.
