Deep, Earthy and Creamy. A distinguished broken flake of Red Virginia tobaccos, small leaf orientals, and a measure of Cyprus Latakia, spiced with velvety cigar wrapper leaf. Key Largo develops throughout the bowl, offering a satisfying and sturdy smoking experience, with beautifully balanced, richly textured layers of cocoa, dark roasted coffee, leather, and a lively, lingering finish
This is the first time that I have participated in the TOTM. How odd.
I popped my tin on July 1 and loaded some up in a Stanwell 03. That is the only bowl that I have had so far, but initial impressions are very positive. The descriptors of earthy and creamy that the manufacturer uses definitely apply. It had a lovely, deep rich tobacco flavor that I found quite tasty. I am not sure that I would have noticed the cigar leaf if I had not known it was in the blend, but there is definitely something extra hiding in there that sets it apart from the other tobaccos that I smoke.
Of course, I need more time with this one to come to a final opinion, but so far, so good.
I just cracked my tin, date Jan 2008. I agree with Q that it's everything that it's described as. I couldn't catch the cigar leaf either. I particularly like the Red Va's in this blend. As usual with Greg, the component tobaccos are of the highest quality & the blending is very fine indeed.
Just popped open my tin. But I think it's to moysty to smoke right now, it's almost wet... I think I'll let it got some air first.
The tin note is interesting I can't smell any latakia or cigar leaf. I think I can smell some flavoring but, for the life of me, I can't guess what it is.
mmm I think that the outside of the tin picked up some of CBB odor, yes, that it... Good Lord, CBB is a nice smoke, but I got my sample on a zip bag and it's odor is all over everything that was inside the box. CBB have the most potent tin note I ever found.
What do you think it's the best way to smoke KL ??? Just folded or fully rubbed ?
Vasco, my KL is pretty crumbly so I rub it out. It's a great smoke. BTW, I've had the same experience you've had with CBB. Mine was with Lane RPL-6. The entire package of bulk tobacco - all zip lock bags - was tainted. Didn't enjoy vanilla scented EMP. Lane RPL-6? It was a long time back. With regard to flavouring in KL - I don't think there is any. I could definitely pick up the Lat, but not the cigar leaf.
I opened a fresh tin last Thursday and smoked a bowl in a GBD 6438. I almost could not taste anything, was I disappointed. Today I gently rubbed it out and put it in a rather large Prince of Whales. The first half tasted pretty good, mild and smooth and mostly VA flavor, as it progressed down the bowl the flavor intensified and I could faintly taste the cigar leaf, on occasion the side stream was definitely cigarish. Although I have had only the two experiences with this tobacco I know that it will never be a favorite as I like bigger tasting smokes. Smooth and no bite, their are other GLP's that I like better.
The presentation is beautiful, dark flakes and good smelling, maybe ageing will be the key to developing it's true character.
I do not store any tobacco in plastic bags at any time regardless if aromatic or non-aromatic. Plastic bags do not retain moisture. They just slow down the drying process. I feel it is especially important to store aromatics in a glass mason jar with an air-tight lid. This will preserve the aromatic extracts that so often quickly evaporate during the drying-out process. If you store your aromatics in glass, they will remain as fresh as when purchased and as a result, you will not taint the flavor of other tobacco stored nearby.
Any tobacco that is advertised as tasting like a cigar is never going to be on my "to try" list. I love the way an UNlit cigar smells, but once those puppies are fired up, I head straight for the border. Can't stand the smell of a lit cigar.
Capt. your CBB is now safely on an hermetic glass flask.
But Daniel Schneider from Synjeco send me the sample of CBB inside a normal zip bag, not nearly enough to stop CBB odor to be all over the box. Fortunately almost all of this order was tins or vacuum sealed bags, but the outside of the tins and the vacuum bags all have CBB smell over them.
Gezer, the cigar leaf they add doesn't make the blend taste like a cigar, it just tune the smoke making it more full and it adds some more nic.
Key Largo, wont be a favorite. I guess that the latakia content is very low, normally I smell it at first light and in the tin and this doesn't happen here. It's one of those smokes to have when you don't want nothing special.
But I haven't been feeling well all week, some medication I'm taking is having some side effects and I'm not enjoying smoke of food very much so I wont be passing a judgment (as is the right of any OGS smoker) or opening new tins right now.
Man, I'm so pissed off, I ordered a tin last week, I wanted to have it today, it would be my first TOTM but alas, no luck this time... :-(
