For some reason, quarter bent pipes just sitter better with me. I do have and smoke many pipes in the other categories, but my favorites by far are quarter bent.
When I started about 8 months ago I was into bent billiards. Lately it's been straight billiards and the ones with the thicker walls. I got a Grabow Grand Duke that's pretty thick, a Stanwell Colonial 83 and a Sav Natural that all are my top 3 smokers.
I started off loving 3/4 and full bents. Then little by little I started smoking straight pipes. Now the majority of my pipes are straights. And I find they smoke better (for me) than bents. Evolution ... start with bents and finish with straights. Weird.
Never liked 1/4 or 1/8 bents ... seems like someone started the 'bending job' and then gave up before they were done.
...because I have all the choices and smoke them all. I would like to pick up some additional full bents. I like how you can see the tobacco in the bowl as you light it with a full bent.
I don't like full bents much.
Bents are much more comfortable to hold in the mouth and I prefer them when I need both hands.
But I think that straights are better smokers. Can't really say why.
There is 1 classic form that I don't like straight, that's the bulldog, that one just looks ok to me if bent.
They all have their virtues; like my straights when I'm driving (I tend to not veer off road if I'm relighting), and bents when I'm working, and quarter of half bents when I'm puttering around. Hell, guess I like pipes, period.
I hate to have a halfbowl of tobacco left after finishing with a bent (especially like the Oom Paul's). Funny thing is, they do feel quite good in the mouth!
for me, I find my full bent Pete controls heat and moisture better than anything else. I never have to run a pipe cleaner down it in mid bowl and it is the only pipe I can burn Pipe Dreams in without it getting too hot.
However, I've had quite a few straight billiards come through my little hobby store and have sold more of those than anything else. I'm acquiring a taste for Canadians but my favorite is still the Bent Bulldog shape. If a pipe is going to be straight, it needs to be relatively small because they get a little forward heavy. I agree they do look cleaner.
The majority of my pipes are half to three quarter bents. I am attracted to them due to having admired the romanticized images of Rathbone as Holmes and the many photos of Mark Twain with his deep bent pipes. In addition, they are more comfortable with less jaw grip required when not holding the pipe with a hand. But, I will admit that my straight stemmed pipes allow a little more intense flavor to come through - that could be my imagination.
Before I started I always thought that bents were the way to go! Now I prefer straights, just the way they feel in my mouth and how they smoke. I don't mind a slightly bent pipe either though.
I like straights and most of my pipes are straight. I also like oom pauls very much and I have two monsters (you can't get more bent than that). I don't really care much for the "in betweens" although I have an Ed Burak Connoiseur slighly bent which is a good smoker.
bit stupid, but it feels right to me... Bents for the home, straights for going out.
vasco,
If that's stupid then so am I. My preferences exactly as well. Mostly quarter bents, some half. My straights I prefer with a very wide mouthpiece.

my
favorites seem to be half or quarter bent they just seem to fit me better
Straight stems I have to hold with my hands because I do smoke bigger pipes
fav pipes
I agree, quarter bent just seems right for me but I have many others too. Pete system pipes I like a lot as well.

My favorite bent billiard is Comoy's shape 42

for me...
I like straight to 1/4 bent...from time to time I smoke 1/2 or 3/4 bents...but I just like the way straight to 1/4 bents look better...
Cheers,

almost all of the above

Pipe shapes
Funny how we all differ. For straights, I love the Bulldog best, I have ten or more of them.

Prefer Straights
I prefer straights. I have several full and half bents. I like them but will purchase straights from now on.

Before I started I always

Half to three quarter
Almost three quarters of my pipes are that way. I tend to grip and hang onto my bowls when I smoke and these wound up being the most comfortable.
How did I miss this one?
I prefer straight, longer shank, Billiard and Dublin shapes. I own one pipe with a bend, and it's only 1/8 bend at that.
I'm completely all or nothing.
I like straights and most of my pipes are straight. I also like oom pauls very much and I have two monsters (you can't get more bent than that). I don't really care much for the "in betweens" although I have an Ed Burak Connoiseur slighly bent which is a good smoker.
