Flea market win - Peterson Kildare 605s

This is why, every now and then, I go to the flea market that happens every last sunday of the month in a place near my house.
It's a small market, you can go over all the stands in about half an hour, most of it is of no interest to me of course, but there's always one or two stands that have a few pipes.
I have no idea where those pipes come from, as far as I know there's never been a pipe factory in Portugal but most of them looks like they have survived a major firestorm followed by years and years of exposure to the elements.
And they all look the same, when you look to a box with 30 or 40 pipes all dirty all used all twisted unless you pick them one by one and look at them it's impossible to select one that looks "better", because they all look the same.

That's what happened this time, the 605s is a standard Peterson shape (straight Pot) that should be recognized on sight, but it wasn't, I only noticed it was a Peterson after I picked it up and thought to myself how someone could let his pipe become like this. Then I noticed that it was a Pete and I looked again, the stem was dirty but in fact there was no toothmarks, the rim was horrible, but, it might be only carbon deposits, kind of a runaway cake ;-)

And after all this pipe is in great shape, the stem is a bit loose and the internal spike is loose too, I don't know if the spike is supposed to be like this, I don't know if I should fix it permanently with a few drops of crazy glue or if it's better to let it be as it is.

It smokes very well, it's the only pipe I have that burns all the tobacco to ashes without any particular effort, maybe it's a feature of the Pot shape. Anyway, for 10€ and 1 hour of work cleaning it I'd say it was a major win.

I love to look at before/after pictures, so here they are. I'm affraid I'm a lousy photographer but this is the best I can do...

Nice that it's a fishtail.

When I was in portugal, I too was impressed at the number of pipes at flea markets. I even asked one older woman about the few pipes she had at her stall, and she reached under the table and brought out a whole bag of GBD's BBB's and Petes! (I got a pre-republic Kapruf and a BBB Rhodesian that day (15 Euro each). (Photos after Resto of course)

My theory is that all these old englishmen live and vacation in portugal. Their old pipes stick around after they are gone ;^)

About the origins of all this pipes.

So far I have bought 4 pipes at flea markets and one of them is my favorite VA smoker.
So far, this Peterson was the best I got.
