I don't know about other countries, but I just found out with 100% sure that Dunhill blends are available in Spain. I just received a tin (brand new -> Orlik) of My Mixture 965 so, about this one I'm sure.
I've been told that Nightcap and EMP are available too, don't know about Royal Yacht.
I'll open this tin on Christmas day but I don't know... Brown cav... mehhhhh...
Ditto
An EMP guy, I loved the stuff. However, in the big picture I think there are better blends out there for the money, so I don't really stress too much about it's in-availability. Would I buy it if it was available... probably, but I wouldn't stock up on it.
This looks to be the price (in € after taxes) for Dunhill tobacco in Spain, no Nightcap...
1876 Dunhill Aromatic (50 g) 5,64
1913 Dunhill Black Aroma (50 g) 5,64
1878 Dunhill Early Morning (50 g) 5,92
1958 Dunhill Mellow Blend (50 g) 5,64
1872 Dunhill My Mixture 965 (50 g) 5,92
2022 Dunhill Royal Yacht Mixture (50 g) 5,64
1716 Dunhill Standard Mixture (50 g) 5,92
1906 Dunhill Standard Mixture Melow (50 g) 5,92
For me those are very good prices.
A 50g tin is 12 Euro here!!! Those are GREAT prices!
Just for curiosity's sake, here is the Italian Pipe tobacco prices for 2009 (These are the only tobaccos for sale in the country of Italy, and prices are fixed by state monopoly)
(Note it's a 700k PDF)
http://www.tabaccheria21.net/Listini%20Tabacchi/listini%20tabacchi/2009%...
Just a short summary:
100g tins of Macbaren are ~20 Euro
50g tins of Peterson are ~18 Euro
100g Tins of Rattray's are ~ 25 Euro
50g Tins of Gawith Kendal are ~17.50 Euro
50g tins of Dan Tobacco are ~ 14 Eur
1 Euro is currently 1.43 US Dollars so ... almost $40 for a 100g tin of Dark Fragrant. :P
The nearest spanish town is 220 Km away from Lisbon, I should go there once a mounth....
We should all move to Spain, with prices like that ...
Dunhill runs about $9.00 US here online for 50g tins. I don't know that I have ever tried them. $7-$12 US for Sam Gawith 50g tins. Does anyone know who makes Ashton?
Well I tried it this Christmas day and this is one of the best I ever tryed.
The odor in the tin is remarkably similar to Presbyterian Mixture and so is 1st light and most of the smoke. It only get's different in the last 1/3 where a full load of Vitamin N comes from nowhere.
Yes, this is my kind of mixture, however I don't think that Dunhill is above the others in quality, yes, this is high quality tobacco I'm sure, and I can't even taste any Cavendish flavor (I can taste a bit on Heritage) but only from it you can't tell that Dunhill is better than GLPease or C&D.
In the overall I like it more than I like Squadron Leader, but it's too full for an everyday smoke, it's better than Presbyterian because it have a great last 1/3, PM goes a bit too much biter in the end.
I can hardly wait to try other Dunhill tobaccos, but I'm planning get some real latakia from GLP next mounth.
Anyone know if the Latakia in 965 is Syrian ???
I have not read anything definitive on this, vasco, but my guess (based on memory of the taste) is Syrian, it being less sweet than the Cyprian which seems prevalent today.
The Cav is in there as the creamy, mellowing agent with the Oriental Macedonian giving the undertones of sweetness.
But I have got to say, my friend, if one finds any similarity to MM965 to Presbyterian then something has gone radically amiss with the Dunhill recipe. I can't fault Orlik outright as I noted a change in Murray's version in the early 1990s and quit Dunhill MM965 thereafter. It was just different from the old Dunhill I began with in 1965-1966 and from the Murray's version I smoked for years.
The absolute closest I have ever tasted to MM965 is Esoterica's Margate and that only at the first few pulls before the bowl reaches level temperature (after that the fleeting resemblance dissipates).
I'm quite happy with my C&D and Esoterica blends now. Will I ever buy Dunhill again should they become available? Maybe...probably, but not in any frenzied mode I can assure you. My standards have changed and it's Dunhill which must now prove itself against its erstwhile pretenders.
When it was still available but have found other English blends I enjoy just as much or more. One of them is C&D's Plantation Evening. You don't hear a lot about this tobacco but it is a wonderfully balanced medium English smoke with aged VAs, Latakia, Perique, and a little Turkish tobacco. It's one of my top five smokes.
I'll order Plantation Evening on my next TAD.
Last month I tried my first real English from GLP, it was Westminster but to my great surprise I didn't liked it.
a) It was so dry that was almost tasteless. An overnight hydratation with the GLPease method (wet towel over a kitchen bowl) returned some taste to it, people say that a full blow English blend must be dry but I think that this one is over dry;
b) My wife really hates the smell, not only the room note but the smell that's over my coat and beard afterwords. I can get away with a Pirate Kake smoke when I'm alone but not with Westminster.
My only chance to finish the tin is this Summer, as a mosquito repellent in the backyard. ;-)
Well, I own an unopened 2 oz tin of Plantation Evening; had it for about two-three months. I do dislike having too many blends opened (and drying out) at one time and haven't cracked this one yet for that reason only. Now I'm tempted to do so anyway.
As to this thread's title: Dunhill
Last night I read on another forum CAO's announcement that they will NOT be taking North American distribution of Dunhill after all. (Goody, more $$$ for the Tarlers, from me at least).
I wish I had more patience to get the car and drive the 200km to Spain to see what it is all about. Maybe in the spring.
I liked 965 but I don't understand why so many go all crazy about Dunhill stuff. It looks to be (on other forums) a tabu subject, if you talk about it all hell break loose... I don't get it.
Vasco, the Dunnie mixtures I tried (& I still have a little stock) was good but not eye-boggling. Personally I think the gap they left in the market has been (at least partially) filled by the likes of Chelsea Morning & Tuggle Hall. Do I miss Dunnie blends - no, I don't. However, pipe smokers are a nostalgic bunch & will long for what is no more.
They are available in Italy as well. However, they are EXPENSIVE. I think you can get better tobacs without paying for the Dunhill name. (They are all made by ORLIK now anyway.) I count myself fortunate that I never had any great love for the Dunhill blends.
Now if either of the Gawiths become unavailable.... :^( I will cry for sure.
