I have just recently scored a Savielli dry system bent pipe with a miltary bit that has Savinelli's version of the p-lip bit. A slot at the top of the mouthpiece instead of a hole.
I love that! It makes for such a smooth smoke and as I tend to draw a little harder than I should, the slot works better for me as the hole sends a jet of hot steam up to the roof of my mouth.
I'll post pics soon as I have a Savinelli Oom Paul on its way from eBay as well.
What's your thoughts?
I have two of the Sav Dry Systems & enjoy both. Also have a couple of Professors that are favourites. Very underrated pipes IMO.
I only have two Savinellis in my collection - both 1970's era Nonpariels. I love them especially the military bit to horn-capped stem.
I do drool rather much over new ones at El Fumador (www.elfumador.com) but have decided I will be augmenting my collection with Petersons first, then later more Savs.
I have two Pisa's, a 611KS and a 513 KS. The 611 is wonderful, but the 513 gurgles like a semi-clogged kitchen sink (no converter tube with this one, appears to matter). The grain and quality is quite good, considering the price and the 611 smokes very well. I will prbably pick up an 'Author' style because I love the shape, but overall, I'd rather have another Pete B10. All my Pete's are great, but the 'Irish Sea' , ' Killarney' and this year's SPD's are glorious.
I own 1 Savinelli at the moment. A Sav Extra straight billiard, and it too gurgles no matter what I smoke in it. I love the pipe though, the fit and feel and the balance.
Just picked one up last night. A Trevi 320 Rustic from Cup O Joe's. I was staring at my pipes and realized I needed more ball shapes, and considering I didn't have a Sav, I figured why the heck not? Also was staring at a bunch of blasts yesterday, and decided I need more blasts as well. 2 birds with one stone!
I will say this, however. I've smoked 2 Sav's- both gurgle. One was a Dublin shape, forget the line. The other was a 603 Opera. The latter gurgles like nobodies business; it pains me to hear my roommate puffin' on it!
Regardless, I'm intrigued by the balsa system, and couldn't pass up getting a pipe with silver filigree and a neat shape for ~$50!
I first scored a Kaywoodie KB&B Chesterfield. An extremely old KW which also has the 'system' sump. An immense bowls and nearly a full bent.
So I thought to myself: "self? why don't you compare the system type pipes across other brands?"
I really want a Pete, but they keep wanting to ding me for $85-$95 for an estate pipe! I'll resume the search as I would love to own a Pete system pipe.
I then looked up the Savinelli and found an absolutely beautiful pipe for a very reasonable price - which prompted this post.
Something about a p-lip, 3/4 bent with silver cap that does it for me.
Thanks for the responses!
A Bing's Favorite that I bought several years ago at Just For Him in Springfield, MO (my favorite B&M) and a Duca Carlo apple that I got from Pipes and Cigars. The Bing's Favorite bowl sometimes gets a bit warm but that's due to the thin walls. Both smoke very well.
I owned "three" of Savinelli Bigs Favorite". I bit throught he stem of all three!. I don't have this problem with any other Savinelli's including three that are over 35 years old!. I gave up on the "Bing's". The stem is too thin for the "balance" length and just does not work out for me. Enjoy, but be careful with the stems!
There are several Savinelli's in my collection, and whenever I can snap out of my Stanwell phase, I puff on the Savi's for months at a time. A few of them are particularly happy with Mac Baren Mixture which I love to smoke as an on and off kind of relationship. Can't cheat on OGS for too long :)
I like Savinelli a lot. I have 2 Straight Grains, one long Canadian and one 1/8 bent billiard with a very large bowl. Both pipes have been buffed almost to dead, the marks being almost invisible. Both are good smokers but a bit on the heavy side. But they are not system or balsa filter pipes, just plain ones (as I like it).
I've been thinking a lot about buying a new one, in the range 100-200 $ but there's always other things...
I'm sure your will be fantastick smokers.
