Gents I'm aware that this topic is already on the forums, but I'd like an opinion on the best source of fire for you, and why?
I use a gas lighter because matches always go out and a box lasts about two days - cos my pipe still goes out a lot.
The gas lighter burns the rim of my pipe though (and I'm pretty careful not to let the flame touch the rim) - so what's the next step?
If my posts are irritating or irrelevant please let me know - I will take it on the chin.

Rob - we love helping
Rob - we love helping newbies! Ask away. I use a Zippo with the pipe insert & have done so for years. They work very well for me & hold their flame well in the wind. I've also found that I burn rims with gas lighters - including my Old Boy. I've never used matches to light my pipes or even a cigar.
No problem Rob
I second Muddler's comments regarding the Zippo pipe lighter as I use one myself. As long as you put fuel in it every few days, you will not have any problems. You can find them for less then $20 US.
The only stupid .....
Question is the one that goes unasked.
Zippo for me when outside. Good ole' kitchen matches are my inside light.
The zippo flame is above the rim and the suction you provide directs the flame only down the inside of the bowl leaving the rim pristine (almost).
The kitchen matches give the lowest possible temperature flame and is better (IMHO) for tobacco taste.
fire
for me used to come from a butane lighter. Matches are cool but messy.
Couple of tricks with a flame:
-adjust the size of the flame to just undet an inch, makes it easier to control
-mositen a finger and run it around the rim of the pipe prior to lighting; the mositure will protect the rim from discoloring.
Zippo never has been my choice due to the aromatic nature of the fuel - do not like the gasoline flavoured tobacco :).
Keep trying...... .
disposable butane
I used to use a Zippo lighter but the taste from the fluid would affect the taste of the tobacco. I have read that the "new" zippo lighter fluid burns clean and leaves no taste to the tobacco. Can anyone confirm this. A few of you noted that you use a zippo. I may go buy another one with the pipe insert based on what I am reading tonight but would like a first hand experience with the current zippo fluid. Please let all of us know your thoughts...
Thanks Everyone!
Never butane
Any zippo can have it's guts replaced free by the factory with a pipe insert.
The new black label Zippo fuel is less nasty in the odor department, I won't claim that it is completely odorless but it comes close.
The temperatures generated by butane in either torch mode or soft flame mode are well above the temperatures of a Zippo flame. The Zippo generates more temperature in the flame than a match. Coolor beginings mean cooler smoking and cooler relights. You want your tobacco to smoulder not flare.
A soft flame butane lighter
A soft flame butane lighter works ok for me. With this kind of lighter is rather difficult to really burn the rim, the black stuff is mainly a carbon deposit from the yellow part of the flame that will rub away easily.
stanwellman, that is a great idea, gonna try it. I hate to clean the rims... :-)
I wouldn't use a jet flame lighter (like the ones used to light cigars), blue flames are quite hotter and will burn the briar in seconds.
At home I use a kitchen butane lighter that have a flexible neck, that let me put the flame really inside without any rim contact.
I loved zippos for cigarettes, I liked that gasoline smell. But I don't want _that_ smell near my pipe tobacco, so I never tried it.
Normal
lighter for me. Love matches, but I'll use boxes of the stuff in a day. Also not really practical in my job because I'm outside most of the time. Will try to have my Zippo from way back changed to a pipe-type, seeing that you guys say the taste of the fluid is better nowadays.
I've found the right answer (for me)
Gents based on your recomendations I took the plunge and bought a Zippo Pipe Lighter (Around 35 Euros). And bought the new 'low odour fuel' (about 8 euros). This after having a chat with the Zippo agent is the new standard Zippo Fuel and has less odour.... Is it odourless? NO. BUT after lighting it and letting it burn for a few seconds before lighting my pipe - the odour/flavour was unnoticable. Although I'm a novice at pipe smokng - I'm a wine buff, so I've tried to train my palate to pick up subtle differences between aroma and flavour - I must say I couldn't tell the difference between gas lighter and the new Zippo fluid. The big difference was that the Zippo pipe lighter didn't burn the rim of my ridiculously cheap pipe.
My verdict - If you are indoors - matches. Anyhere else - zippo.
For me,
... the best is a refillable lighter for about $15.00 made in Austria and uses flints rather than electronic ignition (more reliable).

Right now I'm using one very similar to that one
Bentley prometheus lighter and Zippo and matches
I do most of my pipe smoking outside on my verandah at home where I have a little table with drawers. For me the best all round pipe lighter are a box of long matches. But that is for when there is no wind. As an all round lighter that won't burn your rim, the Bentley prometheus lighter a pictured above by Vasco is absolutely great. It is good value for money. It gives you and nice angled light. I have two, one at the office and one at home. In two years, they have never given me a moments trouble. (No electric flint to konk in) Lastly, if it is windy, I use a Zippo with the pipe adaptor. I just love Zippo lighters. My wife recently gave me a brushed chrome one with the words "United States of America" inscribed over their coat of arms." The new fluid in the black container is definately better than the old stuff -- virtually odourless. But if I had to chose one lighter, the Bently prometheus -- for sure!
kitchen matches
Depending on the tobacco and the pipe, sometimes I can make one match last the whole bowl. I usually do a charring light, tamp, then light. I continue to gently tamp as I go through the bowl. The success rate is pretty high.
I have a couple other lighters for cheapo pipes (cobs, ancient Kaywoodie and Dr. Grabow) for on the fly stuff but mostly those are reserved for cigars.
Lots
I have a bunch of fire: I like wooden matches but carry a Zippo out of doors and have an Old Boy for home, which is a new acquisition that I enjoy. i also have a "goose neck" Colibri which i got from Boswell's at a good price, since I think they've discontinued the model; the extending neck allows me to get to the bottom of a deep bowl without burning the rim or my fingers. It would figure that Boswells's had them, since my biggest pipes come from there. :) Also -- it might have been Bob who said this -- it's never a bad idea to have backup: nothing more frustrating to find the time and place to smoke and then not have a light. I buy a couple of Bics and toss one in the glove box just so it's there; beats the hell out of trying to start a fire with a couple of rocks.
Lighters are part of the enjoyment
Reading all these interesting comments here, I think we all share one common factor -- the lighter and the lighting is just as important as the pipe and the piping. As we pipe smokers mostly have a few pipes, or will eventually end up with several pipes, we also have more than a few lighters.
just a friendly warning.
Cheaper lighters, made of plastic can get too warm and start to melt if used for too long. Between that and the fact that you're using them in an upside down fassion can concievably leave you with a tiny molten butane bomb in your hand (something of a frightening prospect).
I got away with the practice for a long time, but when I started concentrating on flake tobaccos, the time at flame necessisary to get them lit was kind of pushing the limits. That's why I switched to goosenecks (piezo module doesn't last too long) and torch type metal lighters (too hot a flame for best flavor realization). Finally settled on matches and Zippo as the safest and best (for me) combination.
Changed my mind
I'm going to get a zippo with the pipe attachment. I've been fighting to light the pipe all week, this place have a persistent brise, that while being great to keep the heat down almost drives me mad every time I try to light up. In the end I wouldn't care if the thing tasted like jet plane fuel, I only want it light... :-(
Zippo!
I collect antique lighters and have a lot of them but for my pipe, it has been and always will be a Zippo.
In case you don't know, if you already own a Zippo but it is the regular insert type, if you send it to Zippo, they will replace it with a pipe insert free of charge.
